Andrzej Pelczar
May 18 of this year is exactly one year after the sad day when Professor Andrzej Pelczar passed away. He died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack. One month earlier he received the very prestigeous title of a Honorary Professor of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

Andrzej Pelczar was a former Vice-President of the European Mathematical Society and a former President of the Polish Mathematical Society. It was his idea to organise the 6th ECM in Krakow in 2012 and he was the Chairman of the Organising Committee. It is very sad that the Congress will take place without him.

The Andrzej Pelczar Memorial Lecture, established by the Polish Mathematical Society, will be delivered at the 6ECM.

More about Andrzej Pelczar, his achievements and personality may be found in an article in the EMS Newsletter (September 2010, Issue 77, pages 12-13).
