Memorial and Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau
KL Auschwitz-Birkenau was a complex of concetration and death camps, established by Nazi Germany in Oświęcim and its neighbourhood - areas annexed during the World War II. With over one milion victims - citizens of many European countries - it was the main place of extermination of the Jews.
As Nazi Germany's largest concentration camp, it is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. During the visit you will pass through the iron gate crowned with the infamous motto "Arbeit macht frei" ("Work makes free") and see the museum honouring victims of Nazism, annually visited by around 1.3 million visitors. Yet there is more to the Auschwitz Memorial than just extensive grounds and original camp blocks, barracks, and guard towers. One can also see here tens of thousands of objects of special character, meaning and symbolism.
